Talking About Books

Reading with your learner is a fantastic way to promote literacy learning, but did you know that having a meaningful conversation with your learner before, during, and after the book is also an incredibly powerful learning tool?

By discussing the book with your learner, you are:

  • helping develop their oral communication skills
  • connecting oral language to written language
  • encouraging the learner to make a real world connection from what is read in the text to his or her own life
  • assisting in the growth of the learner's reflective and critical thinking skills

Remember to talk with your learner, and not at your learner, to ensure that he or she is actively learning.
